Beautiful in My Skin & My Hijab: Healing Beyond the Stereotypes
Assalamualaikum اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ
Let’s talk, sis. Heart to heart. Because this one is for the brown Muslimah who’s ever felt judged, stared at, overlooked—or boxed into someone else’s idea of what a “modest woman” should look like.
Whether you wear niqab, hijab, or are working toward it—your journey is valid. Whether you started yesterday, years ago, or you’re still praying for the courage to begin—it’s still your walk with Allah, and that walk is sacred.
Too often, brown women—Black, Latina, Desi, Indigenous—are told we’re either “too much” or “not enough.” Too bold. Too quiet. Too visible in our niqab. Too incomplete in our wrap. Too cultural. Too modern. Not Arab enough. Not light enough. Not soft enough. Enough.
Let me tell you the truth: You are beautiful. Right here. Right now. In the skin Allah gave you.
Your curly, coily hair that sheds with every wash? That’s beauty and struggle—and it’s yours.
Your thin, stringy hair that won’t hold a curl? That’s beauty, too.
Your freckled face, kissed by the sun? It’s no accident.
Your hyperpigmentation, your acne scars, your stretch marks, your melanin magic—these are not flaws.
These are reminders that you are a real woman. With real skin. Real tests. And real faith.
We live in a world that praises filters and eurocentric beauty, while often ignoring the softness and strength that lives in our features, our skin, our voices. And yet, Allah created us in ahsani taqweem—the best of form.
And if you choose to wear niqab, that’s beautiful. Not because the world sees you as extra pious or invisible—but because you made that choice out of love for your Rabb.
And if you’re wearing hijab and struggling to adjust it, tuck it, love it—keep walking. It's your journey, not a checklist. The most beautiful thing isn’t the fabric—it’s the sincerity behind it.
And if you're not there yet—you’re still loved by Allah. Don’t let culture, colorism, or online comments pull you off your path. Your growth is between you and the One who knows what’s in your heart.
You are not late. You are not less. You are walking—maybe limping, maybe running—but you are walking toward Allah.
So sis, don’t let stereotypes silence your voice. Don’t let shame steal your shine. Wear your hijab with confidence. Or make du’a for the courage to take that step when you're ready.
You are worthy. You are radiant. You are enough.
And your walk with Allah? That’s the most beautiful thing of all.
🖤
— A sister walking alongside you.
By the Tell Tab Foundation
At the Tell Tab Foundation, we believe in supporting holistic healing journeys — especially for those affected by cancer. While conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery remain critical components in fighting cancer, many survivors and wellness practitioners have also turned to nature for complementary healing.
One ancient remedy that continues to gain attention in the modern world is turmeric, the vibrant golden spice derived from the root of the Curcuma longa plant. For centuries, turmeric has been used in traditional Indian and Southeast Asian medicine to treat inflammation, wounds, and chronic illnesses. But what does science say about its role in healing from cancer?
The true healing power of turmeric lies in curcumin, its most active compound. Curcumin is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These benefits are important because chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are believed to contribute to the development and progression of many types of cancer.
Curcumin may help slow the growth of cancer cells and even cause them to self-destruct (a process known as apoptosis).
It has been studied for its effects on breast, prostate, colon, pancreatic, and lung cancers.
Curcumin may make cancer cells more sensitive to chemotherapy and radiation, potentially increasing their effectiveness.
It can also help alleviate treatment-related side effects, such as nausea, fatigue, and inflammation.
It’s important to note that turmeric is not a cure for cancer. But it may serve as a supportive therapy — one that works alongside your medical treatment plan to help your body fight disease, recover faster, and reduce inflammation.
For example, many people include turmeric in:
Warm teas or “golden milk” lattes
Daily smoothies or juices
Supplements (always consult your doctor first)
Healing recipes like soups, stews, and curries
Turmeric is also celebrated in Islamic tradition and prophetic medicine as a source of natural healing and balance.
While turmeric is generally safe when used in cooking, high doses of turmeric or curcumin supplements should only be taken under medical supervision — especially during cancer treatment. It may interact with medications or affect blood clotting.
Always speak with your oncologist or a certified holistic practitioner before adding any supplements to your wellness regimen.
Our work is rooted in helping individuals live a holistic, healthy life — especially survivors of cancer and domestic violence. We support wellness through education, advocacy, and healing programs that honor both the body and spirit.
We believe in empowered healing — the kind that honors traditional medicine, the natural world, and your personal journey.
The path to healing is not one-size-fits-all. Turmeric is one of many tools that can help support the body, soothe inflammation, and uplift the soul during and after cancer treatment. Whether you're sipping golden tea, adding it to your meals, or exploring its benefits through guided care, know that healing is possible — and you are not alone.
From our hearts to yours,
– The Tell Tab Foundation Team

HEALING BY PUTTING YOUR EMPLOYEES' MENTAL HEALTH FIRST!
Employee Mental Health Should Be the First Priority When Making Organizational Changes
In today’s fast-paced and constantly evolving world, change within an organization is inevitable. Whether it’s restructuring departments, introducing new policies, or updating workplace environments, leadership often views these shifts as necessary steps toward progress and efficiency. But one thing I’ve consistently noticed in many of the organizations I’ve worked for is that these changes are frequently made without considering the very people who carry out the day-to-day work—the employees.
And that oversight comes at a serious cost.
Too often, leadership makes decisions in silos, implementing changes without seeking feedback or input from staff. This top-down approach not only breeds distrust, but it also erodes employee morale and mental well-being. In industries where burnout is already high—such as emergency services, healthcare, retail, and education—this kind of disconnect can lead to dangerous consequences, including high turnover, emotional exhaustion, and decreased productivity.
Let’s be clear: mental health isn't a luxury—it’s a requirement for a sustainable and effective workforce.
One of the most powerful things leaders can do is simply listen. And that doesn’t mean a generic “open-door policy” or the occasional feel-good staff appreciation day. It means actively including employees in decision-making processes, no matter how small the change may seem. It means regularly sending out anonymous surveys to gauge morale and stress levels. It means having real conversations and following through with meaningful action based on employee feedback.
When people feel heard, they feel valued. When they feel valued, they are more likely to stay—even in high-stress environments, even when the pay isn't ideal. Giving employees a voice can drastically shift workplace culture, encouraging loyalty, trust, and a sense of shared purpose.
Little trinket gifts, recognition boards, and appreciation lunches are nice touches, but they don’t address the core issues many employees face: overwhelming workloads, inconsistent communication, lack of clarity, toxic team dynamics, or insufficient support. Mental health requires more than momentary praise—it needs structural support.
If leadership truly wants to “better” the work environment, they must start by asking:
Are we checking in with our team regularly and genuinely?
Do our employees feel psychologically safe in this environment?
Are workloads manageable, or are we normalizing burnout?
How are we responding to concerns when they’re raised?
Mental health should be viewed not as a soft issue, but as a strategic imperative. High-functioning teams are mentally resilient teams. And resilience isn’t built through surprise policy shifts or unspoken expectations—it’s built through transparency, collaboration, and mutual respect.
Organizations must make space for employees to breathe, process, and give feedback. Even when the changes are positive in theory, the way they are rolled out can create unnecessary stress if communication and inclusion are lacking.
At the end of the day, a better work environment isn’t about looking better on paper—it’s about feeling better, functioning better, and thriving together.
Because employees aren’t just cogs in the machine—they are the machine. And machines don’t run without proper maintenance.

Finding Faith Amidst Life's Trials: Trusting in a Higher Power
Throughout her life, from childhood to June 2020, Sarah* has grappled with moments of unbelief. The challenges she faced seemed insurmountable, shaking her faith to its core. From enduring abuse in childhood to losing loved ones and facing the devastating loss of a twin baby, Sarah questioned why a loving God would allow such pain to enter her life.
In the depths of her despair, Sarah struggled to reconcile her suffering with her faith. She wrestled with doubt, questioning the very existence of a higher power. Each trial ignited a spiritual war within her, leaving her feeling lost and alone.
But amidst the darkness, Sarah found a glimmer of hope. She realized that her struggle with unbelief wasn't a sign of weakness, but a testament to her humanity. It was okay to question, to doubt, and to feel angry or abandoned. What mattered was how she chose to respond.
Slowly, Sarah began to shift her perspective. Instead of dwelling on the why, she focused on the how. How could she find solace and strength in the midst of her trials? How could she trust in something greater than herself?
She turned to her faith, seeking comfort in the belief that God was there, even in her darkest moments. Though she couldn't understand the reasons behind her suffering, she found peace in knowing that she wasn't alone. With each challenge, she leaned not on her own understanding but on her unwavering trust in a higher power.
Today, Sarah's faith is stronger than ever. She no longer struggles with unbelief as she once did. Instead, she strives to make God the first person she runs to in times of trouble. She takes comfort in the knowledge that Jesus never promised a life without challenges, but he did promise to walk beside her every step of the way.
In her journey through pain and loss, Sarah has learned to trust in something greater than herself. She knows that no matter what trials may come her way, she is spiritually covered, and God will never let go of her hand until she is ready to let go.
As Sarah continues to navigate life's ups and downs, she holds fast to her faith, knowing that with God by her side, she can face anything that comes her way.

Finding Light After Loss: Navigating the First Year of Grief
Losing someone close to you is undeniably one of life's most challenging experiences. The first year after such a loss can feel like navigating through an endless storm, where each day brings its own set of tumultuous emotions and hurdles. Whether you're mourning the loss of a loved one or grappling with your own sense of self after a major life change, the journey through grief is incredibly tough. However, amidst the darkness, there is indeed a glimmer of hope—a light at the end of the tunnel.
The first step in finding that light is acknowledging the darkness that surrounds you. Grief is not a linear process; it ebbs and flows like the tide, sometimes hitting with unexpected force and at other times receding just enough to offer a moment of respite. In the first year, the pain can be overwhelmingly raw as you grapple with the reality of your loss. It's okay to feel lost, angry, or numb—it's all part of the grieving process.
During this tumultuous time, it's crucial to lean on your support network. Friends, family, support groups, or even professional counselors can offer a lifeline when you feel like you're drowning in sorrow. Surround yourself with those who understand your pain, and don't hesitate to reach out for help when you need it. Sharing your burden can lighten the load and remind you that you're not alone in your journey.
While grief may never fully fade, the pain does eventually transform into something softer, allowing room for cherished memories to shine through. Take the time to honor your loved one's memory or reflect on the person you once were. Create rituals, such as visiting a special place or engaging in activities they enjoyed, to keep their spirit alive in your heart. By celebrating their life, you not only pay tribute to their legacy but also find solace in the beautiful moments you shared.
As you navigate through the first year of loss, you may find yourself confronting profound questions about life, purpose, and identity. Use this time for self-reflection and introspection. Embrace the opportunity to rediscover who you are outside of your grief or the roles you once occupied. Engage in activities that bring you joy, pursue passions you've set aside, and allow yourself to dream of a future filled with possibility.
Though the pain of loss may never fully dissipate, healing is indeed possible. With time, patience, and self-compassion, you'll gradually find yourself emerging from the shadows, stronger and more resilient than before. The first year is just the beginning of a transformative journey—a journey that, despite its challenges, holds the promise of growth, renewal, and eventually, a renewed sense of purpose and joy.
The first year after losing someone or experiencing a significant life change is undeniably difficult, but it's also a period of profound growth and transformation. As you navigate through the darkness, remember that there is always light to be found—sometimes it's just a little harder to see. Lean on your support system, honor cherished memories, and embrace the opportunity for self-discovery. With time, you'll find that the light at the end of the tunnel shines brighter than you ever imagined.
Remember, you are not alone in your journey, and there is hope in healing.
The Beauty of a Closed Mouth!
In a quaint village nestled amid rolling hills, there lived an elderly sage known for his wisdom and insight. One day, a young villager approached him seeking advice.
"Master," the youth began eagerly, "I am troubled by the conflicts that arise among our people. How can I contribute to peace and harmony?"
The sage, with a serene expression, beckoned the young man to sit beside him. He handed him a delicate porcelain vase filled with water and a single floating leaf. "Observe," he whispered gently.
As they sat in silence, the young man watched intently as the leaf danced upon the water's surface, swaying with the gentle rhythm of the breeze. After a time, the sage spoke softly, "Tell me, what have you learned?"
The youth pondered for a moment before replying, "The leaf remains serene and undisturbed by the water's movements, as if it listens to the whispers of the wind without protest."
The sage nodded approvingly. "Indeed, my child. Just as the leaf listens to the wind, so too must one learn the value of a closed mouth. In the stillness of silence, one can truly hear the voices of others, understand their hearts, and foster peace."
The young man departed with newfound understanding, carrying the sage's teachings with him like a precious treasure. And from that day forth, he endeavored to heed the wisdom of a closed mouth, knowing it to be worth more than an open ear in the pursuit of harmony and understanding.
